Union Minister to visit Poma

Itanagar, April 1: Union Minister P. Chidambaram, who is arriving in the State Capital tomorrow, will be visiting Poma village, 32 km from Itanagar and see the Bamboo Processing Center set up there. The socio-economic rural development project, which is the brainchild of State Governor, Gen JJ Singh is a unique initiative towards financial empowerment of rural populace, especially the womenfolk. The Governor, who always has been advocating on empowerment of the rural community or the ‘Aam Admi’ through capacity building, facilitated the villagers in getting trained on value addition techniques in the bamboo craftsmanship.

            The sleepy village has been energiesed by the Bamboo Processing Center and turned into nucleus of various activities like PMGSY, NREGA, organic farming, bee keeping, tourism and also aforestation programmes. Turned into a model village, today, it has carpeted road, power, better school and health care centre. Many projects are coming up in the area due to the BPC, which has already received orders in lakhs for agarbati sticks etc. The Craft shop is already decked with products, such as baskets, mats, table lamps, mugs and carry belts made by the local ladies of Poma areas. The Union Minister will be seeing the successful pilot project on the day.

            During his maiden visit, the Union Minister is also likely to visit the Gekar Sinyi Lake, popularly know as Ganga Lake. High Altitude Lake surrounded by hills is one of the ‘must visit’ places in the State Capital. According to tourism department sources, work on the 3.5 km pathway around the lake, creation of infrastructure, Children Park and introduction of boats in the lake area have added interest amongst the visitors. These projects along with the recent survey and investigation work by Indian Navy drivers and on going electrification work of the lake received the much required impetus due to initiative of the Governor, source added.
