High level team of led Director, National Institutes of Technology (NIT), Durgapur,on setting up of a NIT in the State.

Itanagar, Dec.  22: Go on a fast track. I will lend my support for whatever you do as it will be purview of welfare of the Arunachalee, especially the youth, said Arunachal Pradesh Governor Gen JJ Singh, while interacting with high level team of led by Prof. S. Bhattacharya, Director, National Institutes of Technology (NIT), Durgapur, who is in Itanagar for setting up of a NIT in the State. Dr. Joram Begi, Director, Higher and Technical Education and NERIST along with Prof. S.K. Mitra, Dean (Faculty Welfare), Mr. U.C. Mukherjee, Deputy Registrar (Accounts), Mr. Dhrubajyoti Ray, Deputy Registrar (Administration) of NIT, Durgapur were present on the occasion. Expressing happiness that the much needed technical institute is coming up in the State, Gen Singh said, as Rector of Rajiv Gandhi University and Chairman of North Eastern Institute of Science and Technology, I will provide all necessary back up for academic pursue of the students, reports PRO to Governor.

Urging them to work on a mission mode, the Governor pointed, come up within the time frame.

The NIT in Arunachal Pradesh, he emphasized, will not only benefit the youth of the State but also from the neighboring regions also Briefing on the objective of the tour, the Durgapur NIT Director, Prof Bhattacharjee informed that they would like to start the academic session of 2010-2011 from July 2010.He added, as per norms, 50% of the seats will be for the students of the home State and rest selected by all India based merit.

Prof. Bhattacharjee highlighting on the faculties, informed that they will be starting civil, electrical and mechanical engineering branches based on the need of the State. We add our faculties to help in the development of the State and it will not be same as in other NITs of other places, he pointed. As the Raj Bhavan of Arunachal Pradesh is a model Raj Bhavan, the NIT of Arunachal will be a model one, NIT Director assured. He also placed the land requirements of 300 acres along with proper Internet and other connectivity and accommodation. State Higher and Technical Director Dr. Begi also briefed on the infrastructure available for the institute.

The Government of India has decided to set up ten new National Institutes of Technology (NIT) during the eleventh Five Year Plan (2007 to 2012) out of which one will be in Arunachal Pradesh. The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, West Bengal, which is the oldest NITS of the country, has been entrusted with the responsibility to mentor as well as to facilitate the work of establishment of the proposed National Institute of Technology in the State of Arunachal Pradesh. In view of above and to start the academic programmes from the next academic session, i.e. 2010-2011, a team of experts headed by the Director, NIT Durgapur is visiting Itanagar.
